Joey Jig Music For Real Beginners

“A one woman Wiggle!,” says the effervescent Alicia Wolfe, when asked to describe what she does for a living, running Joey Jig Music Classes For Real Beginners.

Wolfe started her company Joey Jig in February 2012. From humble beginnings with a tiny class of 5 toddlers, Alicia is now jumping and jiving with over 200 little ones a week at five locations on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and North Shore.

What makes Joey Jig Music unique is that Alicia writes and produces most of the Music used in the classes, the little ones love practicing the action songs at home with the Joey Jig Music C.D which Alicia wrote/performed and produced herself (if you attend a Joey Jig class, I dare you to get “It’s Music Time” out of your head for the next week!). There are songs on Youtube for the little ones to practice at home. Alicia also makes wonderful colourful props to engage the little ones.

She seemingly never stops moving to keep up with her tiny pupils, but she loves it. “It does require a lot of energy to keep the little ones engaged, but I experience so much joy and happiness through watching them learning and having fun that it inspires me to make the class as animated and exiting for the little ones as I can.” Joey-Jig-Music-4

What to Expect

Age appropriate classes are 30 minutes in length. There are 3 age groups:

SWING SWING: 3months -1year. Babies hearing is perfectly developed at 3months, our Swing Swing class explores music and gentle rhythms to engage your little ones. Classes are a wonderful bonding time for parent/carer and baby, Bubs enjoy gentle songs, playing with percussion, moving to the beat and fascinating sounds and sights for a rich sensory experience.

BE-BOP: 1 – 2years – Toddlers will love the lively ‘Be-Bop’ classes. Themed classes involve colourful props, dancing, story time and playing percussion with the ‘Joey Jig’ band. New walkers begin exploring their personal space through music and movement. Early speech development is encouraged as we experiment with sounds, whilst exploring motor and concentration skills.

JUMP & JIVE: 2 – 4 years – Exciting themed Jump & Jive classes encourage social bonds, sharing, copying, taking turns and working as a group. Dynamics, tempo, and pitch are further explored as we compose musical stories, dance and play along with the Joey Jig orchestra. Classes are fun but focused providing high quality pre school education.! Joey-Jig-Music2

Why Do Little Kids Need Music?

Wolfe says, “Early music training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds.

Children learn about their world through the magical process of play. Providing a rich musical environment can help with a child’s experimentation with sounds and early speech development. Children also find their singing voice and feel the beat through movement finding their rhythm through playing percussion. Dancing also helps with learning spacial awareness and is a wonderful way for babies to express themselves and have fun.

The age appropriate curriculum introduces musical concepts, fun with percussion, drama and dance using games, hand made props and catchy original songs about babies every day life along with traditional songs and nursery rhymes.”  Joey-Jig-Music-3
