I’m Cristin-my kids and I are exploring Sydney & beyond through the arts. 🎭💃🏻🎨🎵📚“What’s On Wednesday”. On Cammeraygal land

An energetic day at the playground for two friends An energetic day at the playground for two friends is the basis for the bright and jubilant UP, DOWN, OVER, THROUGH by Jane Godwin @janiegodwin , illustrated by Kim Drane @thekidkim . 🛝

If you have a toddler/pre-schooler - and especially for early childhood classrooms - I can’t recommend this one highly enough for working on directional words. I can see this being so much fun and interactive at circle time and the words and play will stay in children’s minds when they’re out on the playground.

Thank you @hachettekidsanz for our copy of Up, Down, Over, Through.

🎶 I also want to mention that I’m going to, whenever I can, pair our book posts with music from Australian children’s artists. Sound up for the oh-so fun and danceable “Move Your Body” by @zindziandthezillionaires
How great is it when the next book in your favouri How great is it when the next book in your favourite series comes out?!
When your THREE favourite series all get a next book, it is excitement tripled. 🎉

Miss 8’s enthusiasm is 100% genuine for these series (she does have a bit of a flair for the performative, too 😅)

🐸 ELLA AND THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING FROGS by @cassy_polimeni is the third book in the Ella series, a junior reader series with a main character that Miss 8 adores and a strong environmental focus. Art by @hykiebreeze ( @uwapublishing uwapublishing )

🐭 BRAVEPAW AND THE FANGSTONE OF FLINSTALL by @liliwilkinsonauthor is such ripper of an adventure series with the most unlikely heroine - a mouse! This is the third book in the series. Art by lavanyanaidu (@allenandunwin @albert_street_books )

🐑 MIM AND THE FRAZZLED FRUIT FARMER - The seventh book in the globetrotting THE TRAVELLING BOOKSHOP series by @katrina_nannestad . In this instalment, Mim, the family, the animals and bookshop are in Norway. Art by @cherylorsini ( @harperkidsau )

I’ll share some of our previous posts on these series in my Stories. They all come highly recommended! 📚📚
🐋We had a whale of a time getting crafty at @theco 🐋We had a whale of a time getting crafty at @thecoalloader 🐋

@george_can_create_it with @handywithscissors had all the recycled crafty goods to adorn the most colourful, blingy whale possible. It’s been awhile since we’ve had an afternoon to spend crafting, and gosh, we loved getting in and amongst the pipe cleaners and fabric scraps and beads and all of it.

This was right in the midst of the very cool Coal Loader Artisan markets - so many super creative and talented artist across these markets.

Love an artsploring afternoon.

It’s the dog days of summer 🐾 - and hooray for tha It’s the dog days of summer 🐾 - and hooray for that because we beat the heat yesterday by popping in to Gleebooks @gleebooks_kids to celebrate BITZA, the very doggy new junior fiction books by Andrew Daddo @andrewdaddo , illustrated by Stephen Michael King @stephenmichaelking .

BITZA is a little “bitza” this and a little bitza that - a mix of breeds that seems just perfect to a little girl he meets in the park. Bitza has plenty to say about this sweet girl and her home (and definitely about balls! 🎾), but where does he belong and will her dog-averse dad let him stay?

These are very cute books for newly independent readers ready for early chapter books.

Thank you to Andrew and Stephen for sharing about the lovely collaborative creation of this series and about your own dogs, who served as inspiration. Stephen Michael King gave the most brilliant dog-drawing session. Miss 8 has been drawing dogs nearly nonstop since!

The first two Bitza books are put now, and we hear that there will be a couple more in the series coming later in the year. Thank you to @penguinkidsaustralia for our copies of Bitza and Bitza: Rules? What Rules?
Miss 8 loved IT’S A TWIN THING: THE BREAK UP (not Miss 8 loved IT’S A TWIN THING: THE BREAK UP (not “the big breakup” like she said, but it does feel that way!)

This is the first in a new series by @krisddarell with illustrations by A. Yi, all about twins Brooklyn and Abigail. They find themselves separated at school for the first time in Year 5 and things get complicated between the sisters for the first time ever.

Miss 8 and I co-read this one, taking turns reading chapters to each other. It worked out well because she was super keen on “just one more chapter” each time we sat down with this one.

For me, it definitely brought to mind the interest of the Sweet Valley Twins books. Twin stories definitely intrigue us non-twins!

I had a little chat with Miss 8 about IT’S A TWIN THING.

Thank you @penguinkidsaustralia for our copy. No pressure, but please send us the next one ASAP! 😂
We had some big feelings here that needed a bit of We had some big feelings here that needed a bit of regulation. After some chats and cuddles, I asked if we could maybe reset by reading the happiest book possible.

It was a yes, and we chose BUN by @hanaunderthetree .

Bun is THE cutest bunny with the cutest burrow, friendly snail, and garden. 🥕🥕🥕

On her very cute day, she goes to visit her friends- a chicken, a squirrel and a cow, and they all offer her an ingredient she needs.

Thanks to her friends, she’s able to make something special so that they can gather together for a - yes - cute, cute party.

Cake and community… honestly, we can heal a lot with those two things. 🧡🎂🥕🐰🧡

*Thank you @allenandunwin for the very cute gift of Bun for review.*
I have been - and I’m sure many of you feel the sa I have been - and I’m sure many of you feel the same - overwhelmed lately with thoughts of children around the world who have been and continue to be utterly failed by individuals and systems that should be protecting them.

The children of Gaza and other conflict regions. Epstein ring victims - many of who had been repeatedly failed long before they met that monster. Little people detained or terrified by ICE in the U.S. Children made victims by disgusting abusers in their own homes and communities - even in our bookish community here. So many people and systems wielding the worst kind of power.

I know this is a heavy post, but it’s a heavy time.

💙
Yesterday, I saw that sign - the one bigger than life, encircled by fireworks, behind Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl. THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE.

I’ve really paused on that image. On one hand, it’s a simple message. But on the other - it is worth every square inch that billboard took up and then some. Because what’s the point of any of this without love. Where to channel these heavy feelings of despair but into love - love that guides actions instead of hate.

And, just as deceptively simple is the message of this book - YOU ARE LOVED by Jess Sanders @iamjesssanders , ill. Anna Quarnta @annacquareart . The latest instalment in the exceptional “Life Lessons for Little Ones” series, this book tells children, “You are loved, no matter what.”

This book is an affirmation for every young person that they are loved, just for being who they are. They are loved, even when they might not feel loved - when their parents get upset, when they don’t get included in something with friends, when they are far away from loved ones. Loved for their inherent worth. And, importantly - for all of us - love grows when it is shared, both with others and yourself.

I wish that I could wrap up every single child with the external and internal love of this book. I think, at very least, when it feels hard to know how to move forward, this is a foundation - love, love, love.

*Thank you @affirmpress for our copy of You Are Loved and for publishing this entire series affirming the worth and value of all children.*
