Artsplorers Meet: 12 Year Old Book Blogger, Book Boy

We Meet a 12 Year Old Book Blogger
Do you have a kid who is a keen reader? Who better to ask for suggestions on what to read next than another book loving kid? Book Boy to the rescue!
Book Boy is a 12 year old who  has taken his love of reading to the next level by creating his own blog, where he reviews the books that he’s enjoying, and shares his favorite quotes about reading. We asked Book Boy to tell us a little more about his blog and, of course, some of his favorite books.
To keep up with Book Boy, follow his blog, and find him on Twitter and Instagram

Hi, Book Boy! Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog?
I am a 12-year-old boy who loves to read. I’ve previously worked with websites such as Creative Kids Tales and Children’s Books Daily as well as The Sunday Telegraph, writing book reviews, so a few months ago I thought I would start my own blog.
Have you always loved reading? Is reading important in your family?
Yes, I have loved reading from a very young age. Reading is very important in my family. We all like to read!
What have you learned since starting your blog? Has writing book critiques changed how you read or write?
I’ve learned it’s important to update a blog regularly, which fortunately isn’t a problem as I do read a lot. Writing reviews hasn’t changed the way I read or write because I only put up reviews of books I like. It works well though, because I do get sent books now and that means I try books I might not have read before.
What’s the most exciting or interesting thing that’s happened since you started writing your blog?
Neil Gaiman tweeted me because I used one of his quotes on my website!

How do you choose what you’re going to read next?
I pick up the next book on my pile. I also look at what’s popular, and I love getting new books!
Would you recommend a couple of your favorite books? Who would like them?
My number one favourite book is Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. I recommended this book on my blog for 14+ readers and I think you’d like it if you like literary fiction and mysteries.

Other books I really like include The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore, and Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.
Do you have any advice for kids who are reluctant readers?
I would say to read a book on a subject that interests you, and then branch out from there. Or, look for easy-to-read books that make you laugh – funny books are always good. I recommend Andy Griffiths for this, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Thank you so much for talking with us, Book Boy. We look forward to seeing what you’re reading next!

  1. Kids tell it like it is so having one review books is a fantastic idea. Awesome work Book Boy! I’ll be checking out his reviews as I’m always on the lookout for great reads for my new-reader Miss T (6) as well as my older nieces.
